To pay homage to the past, the Department of Dance recently displayed vintage photographs of BYU’s earliest dancers in two hallways of the Richards Building.
In the mid 1920’s, BYU did not have an official dance program, yet there were many students who danced for recreation. One student, William Done, photographed some of these dancers as they rehearsed on campus and near the Provo River.
Duane Done, William’s son, visited BYU in May to see the display of these timeless dance photographs. In addition to donating the photos and negatives to the university, Duane also restored them with the use of Photoshop.
“I wish my dad could see this before he passed away,” he said as he observed the framed images.
Done and his wife Cindy were accompanied by department associate chair Curt Holman during their visit. Holman explained that in the future the department is hoping to create a state-of-the-art dance hall in the building.
“These photos already set the tone for the feeling we want to have here,” Holman said.
