Our Mission

The Department of Dance prepares articulate artists in an
intensive learning environment through teaching, scholarship,
choreography and performance that integrate body, mind and spirit.


The BYU Department of Dance is honored to partner with the world-renowned
Martha Graham Dance Company (MGDC) to offer a remarkable summer training
opportunity from July 16-August 3, 2018. MGDC regisseurs will spend three
weeks at BYU teaching Graham Technique, creative process, staging a MGDC
masterwork, and setting new choreography.

BYU Professor Jiamin Huang

BYU Department of Dance professor Jiamin Huang recently
received the Light of China Award in recognition for
contributions she made in enhancing friendship and cultural
awareness between China and the United States.

Contemporary Dance at BYU prepares students to meet the challenges of
a dynamic profession. Our goal is to guide and support students in becoming
artists, educators and scholars. Central to our mission is a desire to encourage
and hone individual student voice and creativity.


Students entering the ballet program at BYU will be instructed
with a unique knowledge base that combines artistry, critical thinking,
technical achievement and spirituality. Performing opportunities
include Theatre Ballet and Ballet Showcase Company.


The World Dance program is the largest dance program of its kind in
the United States and has been at BYU for over 55 years. It is the home
to the International Folk Dance Ensemble and Living Legends performing groups.


Ballroom Dance students prepare for professional teaching, competition and performing
careers. With an acclaimed medalist program providing regular adjudication by national
and international judge and as an accredited dance major, the ballroom emphasis
allows students to receive beginning through advanced training.
