Auditions

Each dance program has unique requirements and audition dates. Please review carefully to best prepare for upcoming auditions.

Ballet

  • New BYU students must complete a prescreening by June 14, 2024: Click the link below for instructions on how to register for the prescreening process, which includes submitting a video and photo. You will be notified of the results of the prescreening by July 15, 2024, which may include an invitation to attend the audition on campus (information below). All who submit a prescreening video will be given a recommendation concerning their placement in ballet technique classes at BYU. Those who have applied for the Ballet Dance Talent Award do not need to complete the prescreening as recommendations have already been sent to you.

    Students will audition for both BYU Theatre Ballet and Theatre Ballet Studio Company in the same audition class. Pre-professional standards are expected. The audition consists of an advanced ballet technique class on pointe for women. Men will demonstrate specific male technique skills throughout the audition. Students do not need to be dance majors to perform with the company or receive scholarships, but are expected to enroll in the following
     
    BYU Theatre Ballet: Dance 490 Ballet Technique 5, Dance 498 Theatre Ballet, (must take for credit—cannot audit), and Dance 234 Pilates.

    Theatre Ballet Studio Company: Dance 391 Ballet Technique 4, Dance 398 Theatre Ballet Studio Company, (must take for credit—cannot audit), and Dance 234 Pilates.
     
    Dancers who are selected to dance for either company will need to be available for all-day rehearsals on weekdays between the audition and the first day of Fall semester. Students who join either company are responsible for securing their own housing for the two weeks before school starts.

Ballroom

  • There are three entrance level ballroom dance performing companies for which open auditions are held the first Thursday evening of Fall and Winter Semesters. These teams serve as an entrance into the Ballroom Dance performance program. If selected for the company, students must enroll in D-388R for team instruction. Other commitments are also necessary.

    Auditions for touring and showcase company are open to company members only and take place at the end of the academic year.

    No partner necessary. You will be dancing basic waltz and cha-cha.

Contemporary

  • Auditions

    The BYU Department of Dance Contemporary Area will hold a combined audition for dancEnsemble and Contemporary Dance Theatre. All are welcome to participate, and Interested students should register for the audition beginning March 15 at patrack.byu.edu.

    • Kinnect brings creative dance to local elementary schools through upbeat assemblies and dynamic teaching residencies.  
    • dancEnsemble mentors and produces student contemporary choreography every semester.  DancEnsemble is a one semester commitment.
    • Contemporary Dance Theatre prepares students for professional performing careers through performing original works by renowned choreographers CDT is a full academic year commitment.

    There is a video audition possibility. Whether auditioning live or via video, go to patrack.byu.edu and register for the appropriate event, either "CDT and dE live audition" or "CDT and dE video audition".

  • Combined dancEnsemble and Contemporary Dance Theatre auditions:
    Monday, April 1, 3-7pm
    2206 Richards Building

    CDT callbacks will be Tuesday, April 2, 3-6pm

    Students should register on PATrack beginning March 15.

    dancEnsemble choreographer interviews/auditions will be Tuesday, March 26, 3-6pm. Link to sign up will be sent through DMSR's and posted on screens beginning March 15

Cultural Dance

  • Folk Dance Auditions

    Auditions for entry-level teams will be conducted in-person. Interested students must audition with a partner.

    Students will learn and perform short dance sequences at the audition. Questions can be addressed to Jeanette Geslison at jeanette_geslison@byu.edu.

    There are three entrance level folk dance performing companies. These teams serve as an entrance into the Folk Dance performance program.

    International Folk Dance Ensemble auditions are in April of each year. They are by invitation only. Auditions for Tier II are by invitation only and occur right before Fall semester begins.

    General auditions for Folk Dance Ensemble (Tier III) for new students are the first week of Fall and Winter Semesters each year. They are open to all full-time BYU students.

    Traditionz auditions are in November of each year. These are by invitation only.
