The acclaimed student performers will present works from nationally heralded modern dance greats Sara Pearson, Patrick Widrig, Albert Mathias, Kathleen Heremesdorf and Peter Chu as well as BYU faculty Aubry Dalley. This concert will also showcase major choreographic works presented at the New Prague Dance Festival where Contemporary Dance Theatre took home the highest honor: the Grand Prix.
Artistic director, Nathan Balser was exited to create new works for the show and said that both he and Joni McDonald, the company’s assistant director, have taken a different approaches to this production than in the past as they worked with a variety of new voices.
“As a director, I see many benefits these dancers enjoy,” said Balser. “One of the greatest is working with and learning from current professional artists—to take part in creating and expressing the various messages or ‘voices’ of these choreographers.”
Contemporary Dance Theatre, formerly known as The Dancers’ Company, has delighted audiences since 1975 with its wide spectrum of dance styles that range from dramatic to comedic and lyrical to jazz.
A winner in the American College Dance Festival competition, the company has taught workshops and performed throughout the United States and Puerto Rico and internationally in Australia, East Asia, Israel, Turkey, South America and South Africa.
