General Information

Applications for Fulton and travel funds will be accepted twice a year: once in September, and once in February.  Applications will be reviewed by the Funding Committee who will then make recommendations to the department chair for final approval.

Please apply for either Fulton funds or travel funds.  If necessary, split your proposal between the two funds, but do not apply for the same funds from both accounts.

If you receive funds, they must be spent BEFORE December 1 of that calendar year.  Funds will not be carried over into the next year.

There is a limited amount of funding available each year in the Fulton and travel fund accounts.  If you have a 20 or production account, please use that money first. Fulton and travel funds should be applied for if you need additional funding that is beyond the capacities of your other accounts.

The awarded funds are reserved for you until you spend them for authorized purposes.   Remember that expenditures are limited to the stated project in accordance with the approved budget.  If you end up with unused money from this project it will return to the Fulton endowment or travel fund.

Mary Lou Fulton Dance Endowment Application

Fulton funds should ultimately bless the students and help full-time faculty as they work toward rank advancement.  Proposals that support student-centered experiences and opportunities will receive the most support.

Additionally, applications receive rankings depending upon the classification of the applicant.  They are listed below in order of highest to lowest priority:

  1. Assistant Professor-working toward 6th year review
  2. Associate Professor-working toward final review
  3. Full Professor, Associate Professor NOT working toward final review, or visiting full-time faculty
  4. Adjunct Faculty
  5. Dance Major student
  6. Non-Dance Major student

Other considerations which are taken into consideration when ranking proposals include:

  • Conceptual Merit-depth of experience for participants
  • Strength of the written proposal including proposed budget
  • Potential to benefit students
  • Potential for exposure and/or influence
  • Enhancement/enrichment of ongoing research area
  • Professional development-degree of correlation to current assignments
  • History and level of funding received in the last three years
  • Access to additional funding

Guidelines for Other Funding Considerations

Fulton funds are not intended to fund individual students’ Study Abroad experiences. However, Fulton funds can be used for the following:

  • Directors of Study Abroad programs may apply for funding for a study abroad experience that benefits each of the participants
  • Students may apply for Fulton funds to pay for additional research and/or experiences that are above and beyond the study abroad program, provided there is significant depth of experience
  • Fulton funds are not intended to fund equipment, or production elements of specific performances, except where it would benefit the students.
  • Traditionally, Fulton funds cover actual costs up to per diem costs for full-time faculty.
  • Students are encouraged to write Fulton proposals in order to gain experience in grant writing.  Faculty should not write them in the name of students or vice versa.  Students should write proposals for projects that are initiated by students.

Anyone receiving Fulton funds will be given a report deadline and guideline.  This report should include how the project impacted/will impact BYU students, as well as a thank you letter from all participants to Ira Fulton.  It should include photos, videos, or anything else that will help you to report on the use of the funds. Additionally, please be advised that no further Fulton funding may be applied for if any previous funded Fulton projects that are completed have not had a final report submitted.
