Traditionz comprises a 32 member dance ensemble selected yearly by special audition. This group presents an informative and entertaining folk dance performance in public schools throughout the state of Utah. The extensive BYU World Dance program has been entertaining audiences for over 55 years of which our outreach program has shared 29 years of success.

Production

The World Dance school outreach program is approximately 45 minutes in length, and includes a variety of music and dance from around the world designed to enlighten, educate, and entertain your students. In addition, the group enjoys educating its audiences about the traditions and cultural aspects of the dances and the countries from which the dances originate.

Requirements

Venue Requirements

  • Stage, gym, or cafeteria area cleared, cleaned and mopped – 30’x30’ performance area
  • Dressing rooms (Cannot be restrooms)
    Arrange to have two classrooms cleared or media center/library close to performance area. We have multiple costumes requiring suitable changing areas.

Electrical outlet located in the rear of the performance area.

MIGRANTS

Do you know somebody that has moved here from a different country?

What country did they move from?

 

Migrants are people that move from one country or place to live or work in another. People migrate for many different reasons. These reasons can be classified as economic, social, political or environmental.

 

Migrants chose to go to new places for various reasons, such as to live in freedom, to practice their religion freely, to escape poverty or oppression, and to make better lives for themselves and their children. Some people migrate to the U.S. because of employment opportunities.

 

When we move to a different place we bring the things that we treasure the most with us. When the Czech people left their home and migrated to northern Mexico they brought with them their dances like the polka. Other people have brought recipes, songs, and other traditions with them when they migrate to new countries. If you had to move somewhere you would need to pack a suitcase. What is most important to you and your family that you would want to bring with you to this new place?

NOMADS

What does home mean?

What would it be like to live in a tent?

What would it be like to live immediately in nature?

 

Nomads are people with no permanent home. Instead they move from place to place usually in search of food or to graze livestock. Nomads moves often and can also be known as a wanderers or travelers. Instead of a home Nomads and Gypsies will often live in a traveler’s caravan.

 

The Gypsies in Europe would travel the countryside carrying all of their belongings in covered wagons and would pitch tents wherever they would stop for the night. Travelling was not a pastime for the Gypsies but was the way they lived.

 

There are other groups of people that are considered Nomads other than Gypsies. The Bedouins are a group of nomadic Arabs that travel the desserts on camels.  Here are some videos that show their dress and dancing. Notice that they are dancing in large tents that they have set up and lined the ground with beautiful rugs. This set up replaces a house in a single place.

Suggested Activities: Gypsy themed crafts, painting rocks (floral and nature patterns), making beaded or braided bracelets, or dream catchers.

IMMIGRANTS

Do you know anyone that lives here but is from a different country? Do you have ancestors that were born in a different country?

What is your favorite restaurant or activity? Does it come from a different country?

 

Immigrants are people who leave a country permanently to go live in another one. Immigrants will bring their foods, language, music and dances with them to their new countries. Often times the new countries will welcome these traditions and cultures in and will combine them with their own cultures that are preexisting.

 

There are a lot of people from all over the world that immigrate to the United States. In the US the population consists of about 27% immigrants and in 2015 there were 1.38 million immigrants that moved into the US. The countries with the most immigrants coming into the US in 2015 were India, China, Mexico, Philippines and Canada (India being in the top spot). Overall, the number of immigrants have steadily increased over the years in the US.

Half a century ago the Punjabis from both India and Pakistan began to immigrate to England and surrounding areas. Their dancing evolved and starting being danced to more modern English influenced music and a new dance form was create that we now know as the Bhangra.

COLONISTS

Who were the first people to come to America?

What do you think it would be like if you were the first people to arrive somewhere?

 

Colonists are people who settles in a new colony or move into a new country where they have to start a new society and land. The first Colonists to come to America settled and created Jamestown, Virginia back in 1607. The Pilgrims were the colonists of Plymouth; Massachusetts came in 1620. These groups of people had the help of Native Americans that already lived in surrounding areas to start their new towns.

 

Life was hard sometimes for Colonists because they had to start everything from scratch. If they wanted to have a farm, they had to clear the land first. If they want to have houses and stores, then they needed to build them first. Even though these people had to build everything brand new and didn’t have anything in the new lands that they moved to they all something they brought with them, their culture. Bringing their dances and music and different cultures and traditions, these people had a basis of what they wanted to build their new colony on.

 

There are different people that were colonists all around the world. The Spanish colonized the Philippines. Many people left Britain and colonized India, and Canada. Scotland, Britain, France and Spain all colonized North America in the late 16th century. Many people all around the world have travelled to new places and started new civilizations and have brought their traditions and cultures with them.

REFUGEES

What would it be like to have to leave your home and what would you miss?

What would it be like to learn a new language in a new country?

 

Refugees are people who have been persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, or political opinion. Most likely un able to return home or are afraid to do so. There is much in the news about refugees right now and there are many efforts here at home to help these people so that they are safe and can be welcomed here.

 

Refugees are not a new thing, there have been refugees throughout all history. At the end of WWII, Jewish refugees migrated to the country we know now as Israel trying to look for a new home that was safer for them. Tons of Jews came from all over Europe and came together in this new place to live together. They decided to become unified together by combining a lot of their individual traditions and cultures from their unique homelands. New traditions and cultures have been created with the movement of people around the world.

 

Last year in the Olympics there was a team specifically for Refugee competitors. Individuals from all around the world who didn’t identify with a country due to the fact that they were refugees made it so that they formed their own team together. There are many things that we can do to help the Refugees around us to help them feel welcomed. We can share and teach our cultures and traditions as well as be excited to learn about their cultures and traditions. As we share together we can learn to love those that are different than us.
