Nathan Balser

Nathan BalserNathan Balser, CDT Artistic Director and originally from Springville, UT, is an Assistant Professor of Contemporary Dance at Brigham Young University. He completed his undergraduate degree from BrighamYoung University with a BS in Therapeutic Recreation and his Masters of Fine Arts from the University of Utah. He has performed on Broadway in the original cast of Promises, Promises with Kristen Chenoweth, 9 to 5: The Musical with Allyson Janney, Damn Yankees with Cheyenne Jackson, and Legally Blonde. You may have seen him on CBS in the Kennedy Center Honors in 2009, 2010, and 2011 honoring Mel Brooks, Jerry Herman, Meryl Streep, and Barbara Cook or on the Tony Awards in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 with Mamma Mia!, Promises, Promises, and Neil Patrick Harris, respectively. He also performed in the Macy’s Day Thanksgiving Parade with the cast of Legally Blonde in 2009 and is on the MTV recording of the same show. He was also in the world premiere of Minsky’s in the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles and in Mamma Mia! in Las Vegas. He toured internationally with Bianca Marroquin in Solo Pido, and nationally with Cathy Rigby in Peter Pan. Locally, he performed at Tuacahn in Joseph ATATD, Annie Get Your Gun, Thriller, CATS, and Seven Brides… Brothers, at Sundance in Funny Girl, and at the Promise Valley Playhouse in The Gift of Christmas. Nathan has danced professionally with choreographers and groups including Repertory Dance Theatre, Odyssey Dance, Molissa Fenley, John Malashock, Scott Rink, and Utah Regional Ballet. His most recent endeavors in Musical Theatre however blend his love of the arts and teaching. His choreography was recently seen on the Sundance stage in the Summer 2013 production of Annie Get Your Gun and he is a new contemporary dance faculty member at Brigham Young University where he will be teaching contemporary dance and choreographing for the student companies and musicals. Prior to teaching at BYU he was on faculty at Western Wyoming and a member of the creative team for the Nauvoo Historical Pageant in Nauvoo, IL, in the summer of 2011. He has taught classes and workshops for the Broadway Dance Projects in NYC, the West Orange Metrowest JCC in New Jersey, at BYU, UVU, UofU, the Utah Theatre Association, Colorado Thespians Conference, and the Utah Higher Education Organization. Nathan is a member of Actor’s Equity Association and SAG/AFTRA. Nathan also enjoys camping, fishing, gardening, movies, but most of all his kids Sydney and Charley and Gus. None of this would have been possible without the sacrifice and support of his lovely Suzie.

Jiamin Huang

Jiamin HuangJiamin Huang is an associate professor at the Dance Department of Brigham Young University and a director of the China Dance Study Abroad Program at BYU, that allows faculty and students to experience Chinese culture and dance fist-hand. Before she emigrated to the US, Jiamin was an associate professor at the Chinese Classical Dance Department of the Beijing Dance Academy and an assistant director of the BDA Youth Dance Company. Combined, she has been teaching dance for more than thirty years at various universities in both China and America. In addition to the China Dance Study Abroad Program, Jiamin has established various other culture exchange programs at BYU, including the Chinese Leadership in Art Education Workshops, exchange programs for Chinese dance teachers to study at BYU and collaborative works in higher dance educational field for both sides.

黄嘉敏

黄嘉敏是杨百翰大学舞蹈系副教授,中国海外学习项目总监。中国海外学习项目使得杨百翰大学的舞蹈老师和学生们得以到中国亲身体验中国的舞蹈和文化。

在移居美国之前,嘉敏是北京舞蹈学院中国古典舞系的副教授。她还是北京舞蹈学院青年舞团的团长助理。她在中国和美国两国高校的舞蹈教学,舞蹈科研,以及舞蹈创作资历已有30余载。

除了中国海外学习项目之外,嘉敏还在杨百翰大学建立了不同的中美舞蹈艺术文化交流项目。其中包括组织中美艺术教育领袖高峰论坛,指导国内青年骨干教师在杨百翰大学进修,以及持续推动中美高校间的文化与教育项目交流互动等。

Sara Pearson

Sara PearsonSara Pearson has been co-artistic director of PEARSONWIDRIG DANCETHEATER since 1987. Creating and presenting “appealingly subversive, engaging, wry, and deeply affecting work” (The Washington Post), the company has toured extensively throughout the US, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and New Zealand. In 2011, Ms. Pearson was invited to China to be a guest artist the Beijing Normal University and will travel to Wuhan to perform at their international dance festival in 2014. Financial support includes funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Asian Cultural Council and Arts International, among many others. Ms. Pearson is a recipient of the American Choreographer Award and has been associate professor at the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies at the University of Maryland since 2009. 2013-14 engagements include a company tour to St. Petersburg, Russia and performances at the Kennedy Center. Ms. Pearson was co-artistic director of the Pearson Dance Company from 1975-1986, and was a soloist and master teacher with the Murray Louis Dance Company and the Nikolais Dance Theater from 1974-1980. Hambone was originally choreographed by Sara and Jerry Pearson in 1980.

Caroline Jean Prohosky

Caroline ProhoskyCaroline Jean Prohosky graduated from Brigham Young University with her Bachelor of Arts degree, and later received her Master of Arts degree from UCLA. She directed her own dance company while in Los Angeles, and later taught at BYU Idaho. She came to BYU Utah in 1986, and has been involved as Artistic Director of The Dancers’ Company for thirteen years during which time the company performed in Israel, Turkey, the Philippines, Korea, South Africa, Australia, and India as well as across the United States. She has received honors for her choreography from the American College Dance Festival Association on four different occasions, and has mentored two student pieces of choreography to the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D. C. through that same organization. Of late, Caroline has been working with dance on film. She was nominated for a regional Emmy for her direction of Woman, the Pioneer, and lately finished a dance film entitled Onward Alone: Women and the Mormon Battalion. And as an author Caroline has recently published a book by the same title. Caroline has choreographed for a number of musicals and has collaborated on experimental projects of incorporating dance into theatrical classics such as Trojan Women and Blood Wedding. On a personal note, Caroline has a passion for art museums, intense novels, chocolate, gardening, calligraphy, travel, and historical dance and film!

凯若岚·普罗霍斯基

Ivan Pulinkala

Ivan PulinkalaIvan Pulinkala is the Chair of the Department of Dance at Kennesaw State University. Originally from New Delhi, India, Pulinkala received his doctorate in Higher Education administration from the University of Alabama, and his M.F.A. in Dance from Mills College. He began his professional training and choreographic career in India, where he served as the artistic director of his own company from 1994-1998. Pulinkala served as the choreographer-in-residence for Delhi Music Theatre for five years, and was named among the 25 Indian artists of the Millennium by the India Today Magazine in their December 1999 issue. Pulinkala’s recent written scholarship includes the publication of his book Piper of the Soul as well as articles in Research in Dance Education and Theatre Topics. Pulinkala travels nationally and internationally choreographing and teaching dance. His work has been commissioned for concert dance (modern and contemporary ballet), musical theatre, as well as corporate and commercial film. Pulinkala is the recipient of several awards and grants including the 2011 KSU Foundation Award, the 2010 Cobb Symphony Orchestra Award for Artistic Excellence, the 2010 Kennesaw State University Clendenin Graduate Fellowship award and the 2005 Murray State University Board of Regents Teaching award. Recent choreographic commissions include premieres at Atlanta Ballet, Rialto Center for the Arts (Off the Edge), FRESCO Dance Company (Israel), and Kennesaw State University.

Ivan Pulinkala

Ihsan Rustem

Ihsan RustemIhsan Rustem (1982, London) trained at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance. He has danced for the National Youth Dance Company (UK), Matthew Bourne’s “Adventures in Motion Pictures” (UK), Ballet Theater München (DE), Introdans (NL), Stadt Theater Bern Ballet (CH) and the Tanz Luzerner Theater (CH) where he is currently employed.

Rustem has worked with many of todays leading choreographers, including Mats Ek, Jiri Kylian, Paul Lightfoot / Sol Leon, Hans van Manen and Nils Christe; created ballets with Matthew Bourne, Alexander Ekman, Wayne McGregor, Hofesh Shechter, Karole Armitage, Cayetano Soto, Ken Ossola, Georg Reischl and danced further works by Maurice Béjart, William Forsythe, David Parsons and Twyla Tharp, amongst others. He works extensively with the choreographer Patrick Delcroix, with whom he also regularly assists.

Rustem began to choreograph in 1999 at Rambert and has since created works for the Tanz Luzerner Theater (CH) Northwest Dance Project (Portland, OR. USA), Würzburg Ballet (Germany), Motto Dans Kollektif (Turkey), National Youth Dance Company (UK), ArtEz Dansacademie Arnhem (Highschool for the Arts Arnhem, Netherlands), Arnhem Mode Biennale (NL), Dance Art Studio Luzern (CH) and the choreographic workshops of BallettTheater Munich (DE), Introdans (NL), Dance Madin in Bern (Bern Ballet, CH) and Dancemakers: Tanz Luzerner Theater (CH).

In 2011 ‘State of Matter’, a piece created for the Northwest Dance Project, won him both the Audience Choice Award (‘Publikumspreis’) at the 25th International Competition for Choreographers Hannover and the Sadler’s Wells Global Dance Contest 2011. He was a finalist in both competitions the previous year with his work ‘Twist of Fate’.

He was awarded the silver medal at the Fewster Cecchetti Scholarship and subsequently went on to represent the U.K. in the Cecchetti International Ballet Competition in Melbourne, where he was a finalist.

Ihsan Rustem has taught workshops and classes for the Zeynep Tanbay Dance Project (Istanbul, Turkey), Companhia Portuguesa de Bailado Contemporâneo (Lisbon, Portugal), ArtEz Dansacademie (Arnhem, Netherlands), Interdans Festival (Belgium), Musical Factory (Lucerne, Switzerland) and currently teaches modern dance and ballet at the Dance Art Studio Lucerne.

‘Heart Lines’ is Rustem’s first work for BYU Contemporary Dance Theater.

Greg and Maria Tucker

Maria TuckerGreg and Maria Tucker are the directors of Rocky Mountain Express Cloggers in Orem, Utah, the reigning National Clogging Champions. Their clogging studio boasts over 150 dancers and have performed all around the United States performing as special guests at the Lincoln Center in New York City, at Silver Dollar City and the Dutton’s Grand Showcase in Branson, Missouri as well as regulars each summer at Disneyland with performances in Louisiana, Florida, and most of the western United States! Their studio has won 25 National Championship in team categories. Greg and Maria are 7-time National Duet Champions, and hold over 20 other Overall Duet Titles! Greg and Maria are the ONLY duet in history to hold the National Duet Title from all three major clogging organizations in the same year!!! (CCA, NCHC, and AOS). Their entrance in competitive clogging included a three year run without being beaten in competition! Greg has been dancing for 32 years and Maria for 26 years. In addition to winning with their teams and duet, Greg and Maria are multiple-time Individual National Champions as well.

Greg and Maria have both been teaching clogging for several years. With a combined 32 years experience, they are amongst the most sought after choreographers in the western United States. Both were choreographers for the clogging portion of the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Opening Ceremonies. Maria has also choreographed for half-time shows in the All-American Bowl, Holiday Bowl and Motor City Bowl. They enjoy teaching workshops around the country.

Maria graduated from BYU in Elementary Education and a Dance Minor. Greg graduated from BYU in Mechanical Engineering.

Greg TuckerGreg and Maria own and produce dance productions and competitions including all genres of dance around the United States with their company America On Stage! Running 13 competitions from January through May, they run the WORLD’S LARGEST clogging and dance competition in the world – Nationals at Lagoon which features over 7,000 dancers competing over 6 days on 4 stages at the same time. They both love working within the performing arts, producing various competitions and shows.

They both danced on the International Folk Dance Ensemble at BYU from 1997-2000, during which they toured to Australia, New Zealand, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, China, Canada and the Eastern U.S., assisting in and choreographing several dance numbers for the dance company. They continue this day with choreographies for this renowned dance ensemble.

If you watch the Disney channel, you might even see their Disney movie debut in “The Luck of the Irish”!

Greg and Maria currently work at BYU as the clogging program coordinators and teach many of the classes there. Adding that to their duties of their dance studio and America On Stage, they are completely immersed in clogging and dance!

Greg began clogging at the age of 5 in the Cloggers West organization and toured to Belgium, France, Holland and Israel. Maria began clogging at age 8 in the Cloggers USA Organization and has toured and competed around the U.S., winning numerous individual and duet National Titles. They have four children, a 9 year old, a 7 year old, and twin 4 year olds! All are cloggers, and the joy of their lives!

格雷格和玛丽亚两人已教学木屐舞蹈多年。结合他们32年的舞蹈教学经验,他们在美国西部的编舞家中名声显赫。在2002年盐湖城冬季奥运会中,他们两人都是开幕式上木履舞蹈的编导。玛丽亚还是美国橄榄球“全美碗”,“假日碗”和“机动城市碗”半场休息期间舞蹈表演的编导。他们很喜欢到全国各地的研讨会中进行教学。

玛丽亚毕业于杨百翰大学,专修小学教育,辅修舞蹈。格雷格毕业于杨百翰大学机械工程系。

Greg Tucker格雷格和玛丽亚拥有自己的舞团-舞台上的美国,自己编导的舞蹈作品,以及“全美不同风格舞蹈”的比赛圈。每年一月到五月间,他们运作13场舞蹈比赛。使得他们成为世界上最大的木履舞蹈比赛的组织者。其中最具特色的是在蜡贡市举行的全国舞蹈比赛。超过7,000名的舞者,在四个舞台,六天的比赛中同场竞技。他们两人都非常热爱演艺工作,喜爱参加各种比赛和表演。

在1997年-2000年期间,他们在杨百翰大学国际民间舞蹈团中参与表演。协助该舞团编导了数个舞蹈剧目,并随团访问了美国东部,以及澳大利亚,新西兰,越南,泰国,印尼,中国和加拿大等国家。直至今日,他们仍然为这个著名的舞蹈团编排节目。

格雷格和玛丽亚目前是杨百翰大学木屐舞蹈项目的联合总监,并在舞蹈系教授不同班级的舞蹈。加上他们在自身舞蹈工作室和舞台上的美国舞蹈团的职责,他们完全沉浸在木履舞蹈之中!

格雷格从5岁起在西部木履舞团开始舞蹈,并随团访问了比利时,法国,荷兰和以色列。玛丽亚从8岁起在全美木履舞团开始舞蹈,随团在美国各地演出和参与比赛,赢得了无数个人舞蹈和双人舞蹈的全国冠军。

他们有四个孩子,一个9岁,一个7岁,还有两个4岁的双胞胎孩子!这四个孩子都是木履舞者。他们生活的十分快乐!

Colleen West

Colleen WestColleen West is an associate professor of dance at Brigham Young University. She is also the World Dance Division Administrator and the Tap Dance Program Coordinator. She has choreographed 26 tap and percussive footwork pieces for main staged concerts. She has recognized for numerous awards including the Teaching Excellence Award. She is also the author of “Fundamentals of Tap Dance for Higher Education.”

柯林·维斯特

Colleen West柯林·维斯特是杨百翰大学舞蹈系副教授,国际民间舞团团长,以及踢踏舞项目总监。她所编导的26个踢踏舞作品多次出现在高端的舞蹈晚会上。她曾获得包括最佳教学奖在内的多项奖励。她也是“踢踏舞在高等教育中的教学规范”一书的作者。

Hu Yan

Hu YanHu Yan is a teacher at the Department of the Chinese Classical Dance in the BDA. He was once the Dance Executive of Closing Performance in Olympic Sailing Events in Qingdao, and judge of National Final Competition of International Teenagers’ Art Festival (2008, 2009). He has won a lot of Performance Prizes as well. Besides joining in the redacting work of “China Traditional Dance Basic Training Tutorial” and “China Traditional Dance Simple Tutorial”, he has also published several papers, discussing about China traditional dance.

胡岩

Hu Yan胡岩,北京舞蹈学院中国古典舞教师。曾任08年奥运会青岛帆船比赛闭幕式舞蹈总监,以及08年和09年国际青少年艺术节全国总决赛评委。胡岩曾获第八届和第九届“桃李杯”舞蹈比赛四项创作金奖及一等园丁奖;第三届“荷花杯”舞蹈比赛表演银奖;第七届“桃李杯”舞蹈比赛表演银奖;第八届北京市舞蹈比赛表演金奖,以及第三届和第四届华北五省市编创一等奖。
