The Brigham Young University Department of Dance focuses on the following forms of dance: ballet, ballroom, folk, and modern. We also provide training in jazz, tap, aerobic, clog, square dance, country western, musical theatre, precision, and ethnic forms. This breadth is unique among university dance departments.
Organization: The Department of Dance is administered through four divisions: Ballet, Ballroom, Modern and World Dance. Each division provides curriculum and faculty who specialize in the genre, and sponsor performance groups.
Enrollment: The University has over
29,000 full time students, and approximately 5,000 take a dance class each semester.
There are approximately 150 undergraduate dance majors.
Faculty: The Faculty consists of 16 full time faculty members, a music specialist, a production director, a dance trainer, and 34 part time faculty who teach courses relative to their specialization.
Facilities: The department has nine fully equipped dance studios, which include ballroom facilities, a dance studio theater for smaller performances and a state of the art dance medicine facility for dance majors. Major concerts and competitions are held in the Harris Fine Arts Center with two fully equipped theaters, and in the Marriott Center, a multi-purpose arena. A dance performance theater is in the planning stages.
Performance & Touring companies: Each division sponsors performing companies which perform concerts on campus and tour nationally and internationally. These groups are an outgrowth of the academic programs and are an essential part of our unique place in dance throughout the world.
Dance Events: The department provides a full calendar of dance events on campus. These events include concerts, student showcase, youth performances, competitions and summer workshops.
Financial Aid: Dance Talent Awards are available for entering freshman and transfer students. Auditions are normally held the first Saturday in February. Other scholarships and financial awards are available based on proficiency and merit while in the dance program.
Workshops: Master classes and residencies are conducted by visiting artists and companies on an ongoing basis. Intensive summer workshops are held annually. A one month modern dance workshop for university credit is held, as well as shorter term workshops for youth and adults in clogging, ballroom dance, ballet, jazz, and modern dance. International specialists as well as our own accomplished faculty instruct these challenging courses. Contact BYU Conferences and Workshops for registration information.
Community Outreach Programs: The department sponsors several youth programs for the Utah Valley area. These programs function during the fall and winter months. Information and registration materials may be obtained at BYU Conferences and Workshops.
Dress and Grooming Standards: The Department observes the BYU Dress and Grooming Standards. Students will also be expected to observe the Department's Dress and Grooming Standards regarding acceptable studio and rehearsal attire.
