UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

BA Dance and BA Dance Education K-12 Degrees

  • For existing BYU students only – auditions are held at the beginning of each Winter Semester.
  • An application and course pre-requisites must be completed prior to the audition. Contact the Department of Dance office, dance@byu.edu, for deadlines, questions, and further information regarding the BA Dance Degree.
  • Dance Education K-12 has additional application requirements pertinent to the teaching license component. Please contact Kori Wakamatsu, koriography@byu.edu, if you have questions about these additional requirements.

BFA Dance Degree

  • Acceptance into the BFA program occurs after acceptance into the Dance BA or Dance Education program. Auditions are held at the end of each Fall semester.
  • An application and course pre-requisites must be completed prior to the audition.

Dance Scholarships

Talent and Achievement awards are available in the Department of Dance. BYU seeks to recognize students who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership skills, financial need, and/or unique talents.

Incoming Freshmen and Transfer Talent Awards*

Each dance area in the Department of Dance offers scholarships for incoming freshmen and transfer students (see Prospective Students). Specific area audition information includes:

  • Ballet
    • Live audition: Dancers are strongly encouraged to attend an in-person audition held in conjunction with the Department of Dance Preview Day. Please click here to register.
      • The in-person ballet audition includes an advanced technique class and pointe work. A solo is NOT required.
    • Video Submissions are also accepted for those unable to attend the live audition and can be submitted here. Video submission applicants may be asked to attend a live audition at a later date and/or participate in a video conference.
  • Ballroom
    • Video Submissions ONLY. Video requirements can be found here and submitted here. Ballroom dance videos are due December 31. For further information and questions regarding Ballroom submissions, contact Katie Davidson, ktdavidson@gmail.com.
  • Contemporary
    • Live audition: Dancers are strongly encouraged to attend an in-person audition held in conjunction with the Department of Dance Preview Day. Please click here to register.
      • The in-person contemporary modern audition includes an advanced technique class, performance of a one-minute self-choreographed solo, and a short interview with faculty.
      • Please note: the solo must be individually choreographed by the applicant and music should be available on an electronic device with easy accessibility to the headphone port.
    • Video Submissions are also accepted for those unable to attend the live audition and can be submitted here. Video submission applicants may be asked to attend a live audition at a later date and/or participate in a video conference.
  • World
    • Video Submissions ONLY. Video requirements can be found here and submitted here. World dance videos are due December 31. For further information and questions regarding World dance submissions, contact Jeanette Geslison, jeanette_geslison@gmail.com.

*NOTE: Scholarship applicants will not be informed regarding the status of their application until mid-February at the earliest.

Continuing Dance Major Awards

  • For current Dance Majors only – applications are due each Winter Semester. Application deadlines are announced via the dance major newsletter and other printed materials. Performing Companies

Ballet

THEATRE BALLET AND BALLET SHOWCASE COMPANY

August 20, 2018
4:00-6:00 PM, 283 RB

Student auditions for both Ballet Showcase Company and Theatre Ballet during this time. Students who have achieved a Dance 391 technique level or above are invited to attend this audition, as a pre-professional standard is expected. The audition consists of an advanced ballet technique class on pointe. Men will be able to demonstrate specific male technique skills throughout the audition. Students do not need to be dance majors to perform with the company or receive scholarships, but are expected to enroll in Dance 490, 494, 495 (Winter semester), and 498 for credit (not auditing).

Free optional open classes will be held in 283 RB from August 16-18, 2018 from 9:30-11:30 AM each day to prepare for those auditioning.

Dancers who are selected to dance on either company will need to be available for all day rehearsals on weekdays between the audition and the first day of Fall semester.

 

Ballroom Dance Company

OPEN AUDITIONS: ENSEMBLES I, II & III

The first Thursday of Fall (September) and Winter (January) Semesters.

There are three entrance level ballroom dance performing companies for which open auditions are held the first Thursday evening of Fall and Winter Semesters. These teams serve as an entrance into the Ballroom Dance performance program. Students who audition for the Ballroom Dance Company must dance International or American-style waltz and cha-cha. If selected for the company, students must enroll in D-388R for team instruction. Other commitments are also necessary.

Auditions for the Tier II perfomance company, Ballroom Showcase Company, is by invitation only, and held each April.

Contemporary Dance

DANCENSEMBLE AUDITIONS

Multiple Audition Dates in Fall and Winter Semesters TBD

dancEnsemble (dE) is a contemporary dance performing company which focuses on student choreography and exploration. Students may audition to be performers and/or choreographers on the company. As part of the dancer audition process, students will learn and perform multiple contemporary modern movement phrases; dancers may be asked to improvise and create original movement at the audition. Be prepared to dance in bare feet.

As part of the choreographer audition process, students should complete a “Choreography Submission Form” prior to the audition. Forms are available in the Department of Dance Office, 294 RB. For further information, contact the Artistic Director, Kate Monson at kate_monson@byu.edu.

KINNECT

Kinnect is an internationally acclaimed outreach performing company. The contemporary modern dance group performs for and teaches more than 15,000 elementary students each year. Kinnect is a Winter and Spring semester commitment.

As part of the audition process, dancers will learn and perform multiple contemporary modern movement phrases; dancers may be asked to improvise and create original movement at the audition. Dancers should be prepared for a short teaching experience and interview at the callback portion of the audition. Be prepared to dance in bare feet.

Requirements

  • Register for Dance 348R Winter – Mon. & Wed, 4:00 – 6:00pm.
  • Register for Dance 365 Creative Dance for Elementary – Fridays, 9:00 – 10:50 am
  • Register for a Contemporary technique class, preferably 241R, 243R, 340R, 341R, or 440R (No audits.)
  • Participate in two Saturday rehearsals TBA
  • Tour to local schools in Winter and Spring
  • Company and fingerprinting fees $50-$60

CONTEMPORARY DANCE THEATRE AUDITIONS

Contemporary Dance Theatre (CDT) is a performing company focused on presenting inventive and acclaimed contemporary modern dance repertory. Featured repertory represents historical modern dance works, newly commissioned contemporary works, as well as innovative fusion forms.

As part of the audition process, dancers will learn and perform advanced contemporary modern dance sequences; dancers may be asked to improvise and create original movement at the audition. Be prepared to dance in both bare feet and in socks.

World Dance

OPEN AUDITIONS: INTERNATIONAL ENSEMBLES I, II & III

The first Wednesday of Fall (September) and Winter(January) Semesters.

There are three entrance level folk dance performing companies for which open auditions are held the first Wednesday evening of Fall and Winter Semesters. These teams serve as an entrance into the Folk Dance perfomance program. All auditioning students need to bring a partner. Students will be taught a variety of basic folk dance steps and combinations at the audition. If selected for an ensemble, students must enfroll in Dance 378R. Other commitments are also necessary.

TRADITIONSZ

Auditions for the Tier II performance company, Traditionz, is by invitation only, and held each April.

THE INTERNATIONAL FOLK DANCE ENSEMBLE

Auditions for the Tier I performance company, The International Folk Dance Ensemble, is by invitation only, and held each April.

Call 801-422-5086 after August 1 to schedule an audition time. Initial auditions are three minutes in length and should show something from the culture you represent if possible. Preference will be given to students of Polynesian, Latin American, and Native American descent.

An open house will be held for those considering auditioning on Wednesday, August 30th 12:00-2:00 PM in room 1137 of the Richards building. There you will be able to meet those in leadership and directorial positions and receive any further information. Auditions are held August 31 and September 1. For more information and appointments, contact the Dance Department Office located in 294 RB, 801-422-5086.
