Academic Programs

Undergraduate Studies

The Brigham Young University Department of Dance provides undergraduate studies administered by four academic divisions: ballet, ballroom, world, and contemporary dance. The core curriculum includes scientific, theoretical, historical, cultural, aesthetic, pedagogical, practical, and experiential work in dance to a designated level. Beyond the core there are specializations that provide advanced competency in course work and performance.

Dance, BA

This major requires a common core in a variety of dance forms which lay a strong foundation for post baccalaureate programs, Ph.D. or M.F.A., or for performing, teaching, and/or choreographing in the private sector. A requirement of nine credits of modern and ballet technique is enriched with another one to three credits in other genres of dance to experience rhythmic foot work, partnering, and ethnic elements. This technique is supplemented with a minimum of another six credits of dance technique of the student’s choice. Students select from several genres of dance, including ballet, ballroom, jazz, contemporary, tap and world dance, which best fit their goals. Additional requirements include genre specific performance, composition, and teaching methods as well as courses specific to dance in history, sciences, music, production, conditioning, and seminars with a rich variety of exploration opportunities. A significant capstone course where the senior creates a project in research or choreography/performance completes the core requirements. In addition, the broad choice of electives allows the student flexibility in selecting ten other credits in specific dance courses directed to their individual goals. This liberal arts degree also requires general education courses which meet the aims of a BYU education and better prepare the graduate to serve in the world. No minor is required.

Dance Education, BA

Secondary Certification: This major focuses on teaching at the secondary school level. Contemporary dance is the foundation. Expertise is also required in ballet, dance history, teaching methodology of various dance forms, anatomy, and Kinesiology. University general education, minor and certification requirements, including one semester of student teaching within the public schools must be met. A significant senior research or choreographic/performance project is also required.

Music Dance Theatre, BFA

This bachelor of fine arts interdisciplinary and performance-oriented major gives equal emphasis to each of the areas of music, dance, and theatre. Designated university general education requirements must be met. No minor is required. A significant senior performance project must also be completed.
